How to build a cryptocurrency wallet: A beginner's guide

A cryptocurrency wallet is the basic tool that a user needs to have before buying, holding or transferring any digital asset such as Bitcoins (Bitcoin) or Ethereum (Ethereum). The wallet does not "store" coins in one place but stores private keys which are proof of ownership of coins recorded on the blockchain. If you lose your private key it means that you will permanently lose access to your capital.

Types of wallets

Wallets are divided into two main types: hot wallets ( hot wallet ), which connect to the Internet, or mobile apps and browser extensions that make it easier for people to transact in everyday life but also more vulnerable to online threats; and cold wallets ( cold wallet ), hardware wallets that store your keys offline on a physical device that is safer for holding high-value items over long periods of time.

Step by step hot wallet setup

  1. Choose a reliable wallet app and download it only from the official website or store, as fake wallets are commonly used to defraud people.
  1. Create a new wallet The app will create a save password ( seed phrase ) which typically has 12 or 24 words This is the main key to access your assets
  1. Keep your notes on paper and keep them in a safe, private place. Don't post them to any websites, don't take photos of them, and don' t tell anyone - including those claiming to be "customer service".
  1. Set a PIN or strong password for the app to be another layer of protection
  1. Before transferring real money, check with a small amount to confirm that the address is correct.

Choosing between self-custody and a wallet at an exchange

New investors in Thailand often start with a local exchange that is licensed because it's under the supervision and depositing Thai baht ( THB ) becomes easier as you become more familiar. Transferring long-term assets to be stored in self-managed wallets will help reduce your reliance on any platform, so whichever one you choose should check the address for withdrawals every time carefully and beware of investment advice that isn't solicited.
