The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Blockchain.com Crypto Exchange have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly launch tokenized stocks.
According to a statement on Wednesday, if approved, Blockchain.com users will be able to trade U.S. stocks and funds registered in token form through the Digital Alternative Trading System that NYSE plans to launch.
The news comes at a time when Wall Street is paying increasing attention to Bitcoin and related infrastructure. Previously, Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of NYSE, had announced its investment in crypto exchange OKX earlier this year.
Peter Smith, chief executive officer and chairman of the board at Blockchain.com said in a statement that "people should not be limited to owning shares from where they live or from brokers and information they may have access to".
"Connecting to the NYSE's digital options trading system will help us expand opportunities for investing in these digital assets to Blockchain.com users and tens of millions worldwide".
Lynn Martin, chairman of the NYSE Group added that "the future of capital markets belongs to institutions that combine the credibility of traditional currencies with innovation and accessibility of digital assets".
Last January, the NYSE revealed that it was building a platform for traders to be able to buy and sell stocks listed in U.S. ETF as tokens with listings on the blockchain available 24 hours a day.
Wall Street is particularly interested in crypto companies and their infrastructure because of its interest in securitizing assets. Large financial institutions such as BlackRock and Franklin Templeton have been using blockchain systems to secure capital markets for years.
But things sped up after U.S. president-elect Donald Trump and cryptocurrency regulators became more friendly, with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approving a token sale last week.
Additionally, in January, the S&P 500 approved a new platform for crypto trading called XYZ to allow traders to buy and sell securities on its Hyperliquid exchange throughout 24 hours.
And last month, Payward, the parent company of Kraken exchange, in conjunction with fintech company SoFi Technologies announced an agreement to send crypto orders from customers of SoFi through its trading platform and provide stablecoins for SoFi registered on said exchange.
