The NFTth party is over, and now everyone has to pay for storage space.

What happened to the Nifty Gateway?
In January, the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange's Nifty Gateway MarketplaceNFT announced it was shutting down after its parent company decided to focus on its main financial app. The company has put in place an exit plan that includes a number of data retrieval tools simultaneously and finding space for artwork storage.
Back in 2011,2021 Christie's sold69.35 Beeple for $3 million, and Sotheby's upgraded24.40 the $1 million fromNFT 101 pieces of Bored Ape Yacht Club to virtually give digital artwork the same treatment as museum-level collectibles. Within less than five years, one of those sales assistants closed its doors.
Why does owningNFT not translate as "having a picture in my pocket"?
The Wallet app looks like you're putting a picture into the wallet, but in reality there are several separate sections: Standard ERC-721 on top of Ethereum records who owns the token and allows it to be transferred while the token points to individual metadata files that contain worksheets and links to images or videos.
Nifty Gateway has plans to transfer metadata and media hosting to Arweave 's long-term data storage network, butNFT some pieces created in2021 or earlier have records permanently attached to the company's servers. The company promises that it will continue to host those metadatas indefinitely and extend the withdrawal period until April 23. However, these promises are only a blueprint for what the company said it would do, not confirming that all transfers were successful.
IPFS, pinning and "missing image" doesn't mean the file is lost.
Many use IPFS, which identifies content from the data itself, allowing multiple machines to provide a verifiable copy service without being tied to any one company's website. But joining the network does not force all of your file stores.
Another point to understand: a missing image may not mean that the work is lost. The browser might pull the file through the gateway, which the IPFS manual on storageNFT warns fails even if the data still exists elsewhere. Switching gateways can help but if no one saves the data at all, switching web addresses does not bring it back.
Why is this important for digital art in the long run?
The museum had previously thought about the issue in a talk published by LACMA last December.2021 Joey Heinen, digital preservation manager and Elian Carsenat, computer scientist studying software, storage and continuous accountability to make worksNFT accessible for 10 or 30 years, while MoMA once spoke in 20152016 of Teiji Furuhashi's restoration of Lovers involving later technologies such as MS-DOS and LaserDiscs.
For the collector, this means that to be a true owner you have to know where your work is, collect what's been copied and provide custodians -- more than just clicking on a purchase button. And if your likeness is still visible decades from now, it will be because these people are working long after no one thinks of them as exciting anymore.
