The researchers proposed the concept of a private Bitcoin transfer in the style of an Zcash without using soft fork .

What is shielded Bitcoin ?

Researchers at the encryption research company Alloc Init have proposed a new system called Shielded Bitcoin . To bring Zcash -style personalized transfers to Bitcoin without having to do soft fork or fix the network itself.

This research paper published on Thursday by Clara Shikhelman, Mikhail Komarov and Aleksei Moskvin states that the system will hide amounts of money transferred to senders, receivers and links with previously spent coins using encrypted notes and zero-knowledge proofs.

Why is this offer different from Zcash ?

Shielded Bitcoin clearly borrows architecture from Zcash , both using encrypted notes, public nullifiers that mark the note as already in use and zero-knowledge proofs to prove a transaction is legitimate.

The researchers wrote that the system would use Bitcoin as a "dissemination and sorting neutral layer" instead of allowing miners to enforce privacy protocols. Audit work would fall on separate software called indexers, which verify zero-knowledge proofs, prevent double-spending, and rebuild the shielded state.

This means that Bitcoin users can get a high level of privacy without the main network having to change any settings.

What was the opposition arguing about?

Developer Vadim Zavodil criticized this suggestion on X that most of the privacy components were already done by Zcash , and he questioned how much privacy the new system would provide in the first place, because the shielded pool hadn't been set up anonymously at Zcash for years.

"Privacy as a function of the crowd Zcash has an actual shielded pool built up over many years", he writes, "the new metaprotocol starts from zero so your first private transfer will be hidden in that one-man crowd".

The Shielded Bitcoin researcher acknowledged a similar limitation in the composition explanatory post, noting that large deposits do not automatically create large anonymity sets. Observers may also be able to identify relationships between transfers if a minority of players generate most notes or wallets have outstanding behavior.

Another idea came from Pierre-Luc Dallaire-Demers, the founder of a post-quantum company called cryptography Pauli Group, who found this structure interesting but "not at all quantum-opposed". He later said he was studying what a full-scale post-quantum version would look like in case Bitcoin eventually used some kind of post- Quantum signature system.

Who's with me?

Eli Ben-Sasson, co-author of Zerocash and StarkWare's CEO contributed to the direction of this proposal. He told Alloc Init that the original intent of the Zerocash article before Zcash was to bring privacy into Bitcoin .

However, Ben-Sasson stated that he hadn't read the Shielded Bitcoin article but wanted to see a vision of privacy and scalability through zero-knowledge proofs become real on the base layer of Bitcoin .

How does this proposal affect the general public?

For Bitcoin holders across the main chain, businesses now see publicly available amounts of money and addresses. If Shielded Bitcoin , or a similar feature system is actually deployed, users may have more privacy transfer options without having to wait for protocol upgrades that often take years and I need input from the broader community.

But it's too early to conclude, because the criticisms of anonymity set initialization and quantum resistance are still unresolved issues that should be followed up with further discussion by developers and experts.
