Sequans Communications, a French manufacturer of the 4G /5G chipset, has closed down its strategy to hold Bitcoin in reserve after selling off all remaining 314 BTCs. The company's crypto position is back at zero and this marks the official end of the policy for Bitcoin .
What's holding Bitcoin in the vault?
An " Bitcoin treasury" is where a corporation takes cash from the balance sheet to buy Bitcoin and holds it as a reserve asset instead of holding cash or debt. This approach gained considerable attention after companies such as MicroStrategy began accumulating Bitcoin , with many others around the world following suit, including Sequans who enacted such policies and started to accumulate Bitcoin .
The idea behind it was hopefully that Bitcoin would help preserve capital value and generate returns for shareholders, but the downside is that asset values in balance sheets fluctuate directly with market prices.
Why did the Sequans sell out?
The company has sold off its remaining Bitcoin s, resulting in no more digital assets remaining on the balance sheet.
Although Sequans was not the first company to test Bitcoin , this withdrawal reflects the pressures faced by smaller technology companies when digital asset prices are off track, or when firms need to maintain liquidity for their core business of communications chips. High-volume assets can become a burden rather than an advantage.
How important is this to the market?
During the booming Bitcoin conglomerate movement, being an " Bitcoin holding company" is often used as a selling point to boost stock value. But when companies start selling out or discontinuing policies, markets usually interpret it as a sign of declining confidence. A large number of BTC sales are therefore often observed to push up the price of Bitcoin .
For Thai investors who trade through the official marketplace under the supervision of the SEC (Thailand) , this phenomenon is a clear example that "corporate demand" is one factor driving crypto prices in both directions, buying and selling. The price for Bitcoin displayed on the Thai platform will be calculated as the value of baht ( THB ) based on the exchange rate at that time.
How often does a company withdraw from the Bitcoin vault?
Foreign crypto media such as CoinDesk, Cointelegraph, The Block, and Decrypt have reported cases of companies announcing plans to stockpile Bitcoin then cancelling or selling it out at a later time. Sequans' case that sold off Bitcoin , leaving only 314 BTC was not an isolated incident but in the same vein as companies who found the cost risk and rewards of holding cryptocurrencies too high for their core business.
The next point to note is that the number of companies still holding Bitcoin in their balance sheet will either continue to hold it for a long time or gradually decline as market conditions and individual company boxes change. These movements all affect the demand for sales of Bitcoin in the overall market, and are information that investors worldwide including traders in Thailand should keep an eye on regularly.
