Greece's Ministry of Finance has drafted a law to tax the profits from crypto investments at a rate,[34] reported by[35] citing Reuters and local media, noting that currently Greece does not have a legal framework for cryptocurrency tax collection. The body is rumored to provide an exemption on 500 euros (about US$580) per year crypto gains and will present it to parliament in November.[36]
Taxes are collected when converted into fiat money or used to pay for goods and services.
The body of law mandates the collection of a specific tax on net profits when selling cryptocurrencies, after deducting transaction fees. Exchanging one cryptocurrency for another such as Bitcoin will not result in an immediate tax burden; the rule applies only if the holder converts assets into euros or other fiat currencies or transfers them to pay for goods and services.
Additionally, investors can use the capital gains deducted from future crypto profits for no more than five years of taxation, while those derived from staking or lending will be taxed only on sale.
The regulation dates back to 1 January2025 and was filed in 2027
The new law will come into force retroactively from 1 January,2025 so that profits generated from such year onwards must be shown in the form of tax returns filed for the year.2027 Submitting a draft bill to parliament in November is therefore an important step towards setting a real enforcement timeframe.
Greece is under both the Markets in crypto -Assets Regulation and DAC8 frameworks.EU
Greece adheres to the Markets in crypto -Assets Regulation of EU by the Hellenic Capital Market Commission, which is responsible for approving and regulating crypto providers. The Bank of Greece oversees the security of issuers.
The issuance of licenses was delayed as until September no Greek operator appeared on the register,EU which is about two months after the end of the transition period under Markets in crypto -Assets Regulation on 1 July.
Since January,2026 the DAC8 decree ofEU requires crypto exchanges to store user and transaction details for reporting to national tax authorities, similar to how banks handle general accounts. Greece mandated such a rule in domestic law in May.2026
The tax rate in EU also varies from 8% to 30%
Reactions to crypto taxation in EU vary widely, with rates ranging from 8% in Cyprus to 30% in France. Some countries are more lenient such as Germany exempting taxes on cryptocurrencies held for over a year and Portugal applying the same conditions after 365 days.
The next point to look out for is that a draft law will enter the Greek parliament in November and enforce retroactively as of 1 January,2025 which would make crypto profits from said year onwards subject to being shown in taxable years.2027
