Japan adds to its annexation of Russia with the seizure of 33 organizations and nine individuals.
The beginning of the measure.
The Japanese government added Russian cryptocurrency exchange Garantex to a list of expansionary sanctions against Russia, citing the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to a joint statement on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
Officials identified 33 entities and nine individuals linked to Russia in the asset forfeiture account, which restricts payments and financial transactions with targeted groups. The addition of this name makes Anteks fall under Japanese restrictions beyond those already enforced by many jurisdictions.
A connection to the previous ritual.
Gantex had previously been sanctioned by the United States, European Union and other jurisdictions on the grounds that it helped Russian agencies evade financial constraints. The new measures also target 35 ships identified as part of Russia's oil-lining shadow fleet and help Moscow circumvent existing sanctions by restricting various services including repair and insurance for designated vessels.
Japan is aiming for the measure to reduce Russian crude oil export revenues, however a report by blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs on CointelegraphCointelegraph reported in August2025 noted that Nantex may have an advance backup plan to mitigate its impact from U.S. operations before the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) at the US Treasury Department seizes control of TEXA for a second time along with successor platform Grinex.
The challenge to efficiency.
T.R.M. Labs noted that the rollback measures may not succeed because an agency with similar anttex characteristics appears to have prepared a backup plan in advance of the expected enforcement, allowing for quick transfers of customers, infrastructure and funds to the successor platform. This incident reflects the complexity of enforcing Russian crypto-platforms and financial channels. Although Japan has expanded its restrictions to be consistent with other countries' practices, the outcome may depend on how closely the counterparty platform is tracked and blocked.
