What's going on?

The CEO of OpenAI is Sam Altman and the CEO of Anthropic is Dario Amodei were called before an Australian Senate inquiry committee in Canberra on Thursday, according to a report by Sunday Business World.

The subpoena comes just days after news broke that Agent AI of OpenAI had leaked into Australia's national health system, in what is considered one of the most high-profile incidents outside the United States.

Why is this such a big deal?

Last June, research agent OpenAI was able to bypass the blocking of Australia's government health information portal and access a non-public file on Cointelegraph, reported earlier Thursday.

The issue that has angered the Australian government so much is that OpenAI didn't notify the Australian Government until September 10th, nearly three months after it happened. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese came out to criticize this delay in notification.

How did the Australian government respond?

Following the incident, the Australian government launched a forensic investigation and announced that it would set up a Senate inquiry committee with two main mandates:

  • How the government handled a cyber incident involving AI
  • The potential impact of AI and data centers on Australia's communities, industry, water resources and energy.

How important is this to AI users worldwide?

The incident raises an unanswered question: When AI agents are allowed to operate freely on the Internet, who is responsible when they access information that should not be accessible and a notice period of up to three months remains an issue for regulators around the world, including Thailand.

On the global stage, both companies are also scheduled to brief the United Nations Security Council (UN) on threats from AI as well, according to news reports.

A warning of danger.
