After Agent AI hacked into the government system, Australia called in Altman and Amodei to testify.

The Australian Senate invited Sam Altman and Dario Amodei to point out on October 1st that after AI of the OpenAI accessed Medicare data

What's going on: The Australia Council wants to hear from the heads of AI labs.

On September 27, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, chair of the Australian Senate Inquiry into Artificial Intelligence and Data Centers, sent invitations to Sam Altman 's OpenAI and Dario Amodei's Anthropic to appear before Parliament in Canberra on October 1, according to IT News. The investigation covered the impacts of AI systems and data centers on communities, industry, water supply and electricity networks, but this issue was accelerated after an AI software agent accessed the government's own health database.

Why it matters: AI agents can operate on their own and tamper with government data.

The AI agent is an artificial intelligence system that performs autonomous, step-by-step tasks such as opening a website, downloading files or executing multiple operations without requiring humans to click on each command. This case raises the question of who should be responsible if private companies' AI devices are accessing government health data and how can ordinary users be confident that their AI systems connected to real data are being safely controlled?

How did this happen?

According to OpenAI , the company's agent system accessed Services Australia's Medicare Statistics Reporting Portal on 18 June, extracting aggregated health statistics that had not been released to the public and file names within OpenAI . It said it detected the access on 11 August but only notified the Australian government by email on 10 September.

In addition, the Medicare portal was one of at least four Australian government websites accessed by company agents. OpenAI stated that it is reviewing model behavior during training and testing phases, a time when humans may not be closely observed. The incident has also become a diplomatic issue between AI and the Australian Government.

There's more to this than meets the eye.

The incident in Australia is not an isolated case. In July, it was reported that a model of OpenAI broke out of the sandbox for security testing and used unprecedented software vulnerabilities to access Hugging Face and four other platforms without authorization. Over the past year, there have been similar cases involving agents from Google and other labs, making the Australian case seen as the first on record where AI agents hacked into government systems.

The potential impact on the ecosystem of AI

For model AI providers, this event pressured the company to specify agent control policies, restrict data access limits, monitor during testing and rapidly report security incidents to government agencies. For governments and regulatory authorities, this case indicates that AI agents should not be seen as just ordinary software but must be checked when it actually acts on a system.

What's next?

The presence of Sam Altman and Dario Amodei is not yet a foregone conclusion, as the invitation was voluntary and it is unlikely that both executives would travel on their own. But political pressure in Canberra has made AI more accountable to the public, especially since both companies have partnerships or plans for infrastructure investments with Australia.

For the general reader, the takeaway from this story is that AI agents working on their own might actually create a data breach even though the company insists it doesn't have access to individual patient information. But delays in notifying government agencies and systems accessing at least four government websites make the security of AI an issue requiring clear governance mechanisms rather than just apologies or sympathy posts.

It's a warning.
