What's this about?

The Blockchain Association, one of the most influential crypto industry advocacy groups in Washington, D.C., announced a change of executive chairman with Summer Merzinger stepping down as CEO on October 16 and remaining in an advisory role until the end of the year[17] to help transition through.

After that, founder Kristin Smith will return to the role of interim CEO from October 17 onwards. The organization said she'll take over this role as the process for selecting a new permanent CEO begins.

Why is this place so important to the U.S. crypto industry?

This change of leadership comes at a time when digital asset laws and regulations in the U.S. are exceptional: Blockchain Associations act as representatives for companies in the crypto industry to communicate with legislators and regulators, so whoever sits on the CEO's seat has an impact on the direction that the industry presents to politicians and federal government agencies.

Kristin Smith was the organization's first employee when it launched in 2011,2018 before serving as CEO until 2013.2025 She has been instrumental in making the organization one of Washington's most prominent policy lobbying groups.

Summer Merzinger, who took over as CEO in June 2009,2025 had previously served on the board of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Her tenure coincided with a period when US digital asset policy was changing rapidly, new stablecoin laws were being enacted and federal regulators issued increasingly detailed guidelines.

The organization credits Merzinger with helping to guide the institute through these developments and increasing engagement of policymakers and regulators, while Smith currently also serves as president of the Solana Policy Institute.

Cryptocurrency policy has shifted from acceptance to regulation.

What makes industry representative organizations even more important is that the policy landscape has been changing for years, and Washington's crypto lobbying is largely vertical. Industry representative groups are spending a lot of resources arguing enforcement-based regulation and trying to convince lawmakers that digital assets need specific regulatory frameworks.

Now the conversation has shifted, stablecoin regulation is progressing, regulators are issuing more specific and detailed guidance, and Congress is debating broader market structure legislation.

For readers unfamiliar with industry terminology, a stablecoin is a coin that has been designed to have fixed value. Often referring to dollars or other stable assets, the definition of what constitutes a security is the question of whether certain types of digital assets should be considered securities. DeFi refers to zero-discrimination finance that operates through virtual contracts without relying on traditional intermediaries. Token signatures are the process of converting physical assets into digital tokens on blockchains, while futures markets are platforms where users place money against the outcome of future events.

The change in the leadership of blockchain associations comes at a time when the industry not only needs to protect itself from enforcement, but also has to get involved with designing new rules.

What impact could this have on readers in Thailand and Myanmar?

Although this story originated in the U.S., for readers in Thailand and Myanmar who follow digital assets, it may be an indirect sign that global standards are moving toward greater clarity: US laws and regulations often influence the practices of platforms, providers and investors around the world.

In Thailand, the SEC (Thailand) agencies already have a regulatory role overseeing digital assets and domestic providers such as Bitcup need to keep an eye on developments in regulation from abroad as well, especially when asset classification, data disclosure, platform security, and stablecoin laws can affect market expectations around the world.

For readers in Myanmar who are new to crypto, the changes in the U.S. may also be another avenue for understanding how international regulation is evolving, even though each country's legal environment, access to services and vulnerabilities differ from one another.

What's next?

What remains to be seen is who will become the permanent CEO of the Blockchain Association, and how does the organization take a stance on the hot issues that lie ahead: securities classification, fire, tokenization, futures markets, stablecoins, and the dividing line between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Federal Trade Commission (CFTC).

The transition was not immediate, as Merzinger will remain in an advisory role until the end of the year.2026 While Smith is clearly back on retainer, this move represents a return to leadership for one of the longest-serving policymakers at a time when the crypto industry has been shifting from acceptance towards co-regulation.
