The co-founder of Zcash promoted Vitalik's quantum computer ready guidance as 'the right way for Ethereum ?'

The debate over the choice of lattice or hash-based cryptography for Ethereum

Zcash's co-founder Eli Ben Sasson, Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin and Gabriel Shapiro of Delphi Labs (originally designated General Counsel) participated in a discussion on Platform X about designing lattice cryptography with blockchain hashes after a16z crypto dog recently posted support for lattice.

The beginning of the argument.

a16z crypto states in the editorial that Ethereum plans to design an all-hashbase signature aggregation, which relies on recursive SNARK proofing. This approach comes with coordinate workloads, porous surfaces and unproven security; relying solely on hashed cryptography may seem safer, but in some designs can make the system more vulnerable.AI

Eli Ben Sasson argues that Lattice has a robust mathematical structure and is vulnerable to being hacked,Starknet.io while Gabriel Shapiro views Ethereum's direction as still the best option for Ethereum, and different from a16z crypto's view.

Standards of the network and proposals

Ethereum's Lean consensus development plan includes replacing all BLS signatures with hash-based ones, especially some forms of Winternitz and using scalable and transparent proofs (STARKs) to combine the signatures.

Gabriel Shapiro suggested that lattice cryptography could be used for accounts and wallets via precompile if it is proven to be secure from,8141 and also stated that hash-based encryption paves the way for Ethereum to go full speed ahead.

Vitalik Buterin agrees with this proposal, noting that Ethereum could also make systems for lattice-like accounts and wallets via precompile if it is proven to be secure from.AI He adds that the optimal route for acceptance of all parties' cryptographic hardware is through.8288 Users generate a desired signature on their own machine, then create STARK. The combined system would allow it to be loaded into the system without sending chain instructions, and Ethereum wouldn't add any new precompilation.

Eli Ben Sasson responded in a post dated October 19,2026 which the source identified as Eli Ben-Sasson,Starknet.io agreeing that this is the right path for Ethereum, with references to Vitalik Buterin and lex_node.

Long-term security reasons.

In addition to Bitcoin, most large blockchains use proof of stake, which allows the validator to vote on each block by signing a name. This makes it possible for large-scale sets of validators to actually work by combining an Ethereum signature using BLS signatures with algebraic structures that can combine tens of thousands of validator signatures per slot into a single group element.

But the advantage of BLS is that it can't be post-quantum, because there are no currently known post-quantum signature systems that combine signatures in this way.

Vitalik Buterin described Ethereum's anti-quantum blueprint earlier in the year as being based on recursive signatures and a system that integrates proofing at the protocol level. He referred to the development of account abstraction within the system via an Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP8141), which provides an abstract framework for transaction verification, transactions and gas payments, enabling first-tier accounts to use any signature elimination algorithm.

Things to follow.

This argument points out that the choice of Ethereum's cryptography platform is not only a matter of speed, but also weighs in between post-quantum security, vulnerability to hacking,Starknet.io account and wallet flexibility as well as how to make the protocol support multiple signatures without constantly adding new design burdens.

It's a warning.
