Bitcoin's quantum crisis: three ways researchers are looking for solutions

Warnings that quantum computers could steal assets from Bitcoin wallets usually come up every couple of months, but this week there are three at once: reducing the cost of one line of defense, designing for privacy and putting in place an asset management system, making it a perfect moment to separate real risks from noise.

What is Q-Day and why does it matter?

Q-day is a term for the period of time when quantum computers are powerful enough to attack Bitcoin's current system. Bitcoin uses curved encryption linking private keys with public keys. The theory states that a quantum computer running Shore's algorithm could calculate the private key from the public key, generate false signatures and extract money out of its wallet.

There's no such device today, and the estimated time of birth varies greatly, but that frame is getting shorter, which speeds up preparation.

Three new directions coming together this week.

The first is to make a quantum-resistant transaction under the current rules of bitcoin. StarGuar has mined its first so-called quantum resistance deal on the mainstream network last month, and noted that in an open competition with AI models at the top of the charts, the estimated capital cost for such transactions was reduced from about US$320 to around $67 within one week.

The company itself acknowledges that this is only a front-end solution, the business isn't standardized yet and it only protects coins whose public keys have not been disclosed before. Despite its progress, StarGuard still sees soft forks as a better long-term solution.

The second way is to change the protocol so that it accepts quantum post-signature, which is more resilient. But Bitcoin has a decentralized architecture, and designing, testing, and deploying takes time, and the community only started working on this in earnest recently.

The third way is to protect the asset management layer. This week, Coinbase's head of cryptography explained how it was building a post-quantum asset management system. Coinbase said that it manages about $250 billion in assets, which are designed to adapt to future bitcoin signatures and include backups if the chosen hardware standard doesn't match key separation techniques used by asset managers today.

Connected personal issues.

The encryption tools used to fight quantum are also complicated by the attempt to make Bitcoin more private. Researchers released a cache model for cloaked transfers this week as well. This news doesn't say that quantum is the only layer of privacy, but it does show that one design can affect multiple layers simultaneously.

How should Thai users read this?

Users who trade in Thai baht through a local exchange such as Bitcup, which operates under the SEC (Thailand) and stores assets on the exchange will be among those whose board's security layer is critical, while private key holders themselves may be more at risk if their public keys are compromised.

The Q-day is still hypothetical, and it's likely to be years away. There are no products coming out this round that will make Bitcoin quantum safe at all. What's happening is the circle is shifting from theory to practice, reducing defense costs and measuring how much of a gap there is between quantum readiness and bitcoins being ready.

The gap between those two numbers is how much time the industry has left to prepare.

A warning.
