Bitcoin's hidden business idea: 10 years of deals that could change privacy

What's this about?
The group of researchers behind Alloc Init proposed an approach called Shielded Bitcoin, which is a meta-protocol designed to hide BTC transactions and counterparties without changing the identity of bitcoin and relying on trusted bridge operators. This idea borrows from the form of encrypted notes that make Zcash famous but builds directly upon the underlying layer of Bitcoin and uses cryptographic evidence as a reliable medium for transmitting value.

Why is it important for bitcoin users?
Clara Shikhelman, Mikhail Komarov and Aleksei Moskvin who proposed this approach start from the basic constraint that Bitcoin's type-separated account is public so the amount of money, transaction time, and linkage between listings are often checked and matched to a known wallet. For general users, seeing the wallet location and transfer value can lead to an authentic identity match. A Grayscale study has previously indicated AI makes it easier to pair a wallet address with real identities.

How does the hidden value mechanism work?
A shielded bitcoin would put the value in an encrypted note, each with a sum of money and information about who received it. For example, when Alice paid Bob, Alice's wallet would release the Bitcoin-encoded note along with zero-knowledge proof that confirms that the used note actually exists, that Alice has rights to use it, and that the amount is balanced out without revealing details publicly.

Software called indexers will read these transfers, examine the evidence and track the nullifier, which is a unique code that prevents repeated notes from being used.

The design also separates the use of money from viewing it. Wallets can be divided into functional keys: a key for spending and a read-only key for receiving funds, in addition to a third key for collecting funds and another key for recovering their own history so that users can share some information with others without authorizing spending.

Where are the privacy options available?
Shielded Bitcoin may join existing privacy efforts for BTC, each with different transactional options such as CoinJoin, PayJoin and Silent Payments. Working in the current business model of bitcoin makes tracing ownership more difficult but most money and business structures are still visible. Shikhelman and colleagues explain that Zcash is the closest example to an encrypted note model because this privacy coin has just made its best price in 10 years and uses encryption notes, a nullifier and zero-knowledge proof.

However, Zcash operates on its own blockchains and algorithms while Shielded Bitcoin draws from the history of bitcoin. This difference means that transaction patterns, wallet-specific behaviors, and recurring fees may also help observers narrow down relationships over time.

Who will be affected and what precautions to take
For users in Thailand who buy and sell bitcoin with Thai baht through Bitkub or platforms under the direction of the Thai CCP, this concept does not change the fact that transactions on the Bitcoin network are public and services subject to regulation still need identity verification and anti-counterfeiting measures. The developer or maintainer of Shielded Bitcoin is a case study that encrypted privacy over BTC can be achieved without changing identities but reliance on open indexers must also be designed for easy and secure inspection.
